Only 4 Hours Left to Purchase Everything Chris Marker Ever Produced (But Not Really)

March 18, 2010

My first thought was “I wish I had $25,000”. Then I read the description and thought “There are exactly zero details about any of this stuff ” What kind of completest collector offers something like this without any details about the condition of the journals and magazines; or the  sources, quality, format, and subtitle language of the videos?

Also, where did they get that photo of him?? Is it real? If so, he looks like Alan Arkin.

UPDATE: Thanks to Daniel from ChrisMarker.org for a precise synopsis of why this is so weird and wrong and puzzling (in the comments). Also, my friend Gideon points out that he’s seen this photo before, and that it’s really him, and not Alan Arkin.  The only one I had ever seen was this:

Now I feel like I’m contributing to the problem by posting a photo of him!

Anyways, here’s the link to the auction for what it’s worth (and as long as it lasts). Below the fold is the full listing and description.

I have attempted to list the items chronologically but some will inevitably be out of place. Full Descriptions of each item are available but since there is so much to list I am not including them with each item/set. The films are for the most part in French but some are translated versions (and are for viewing purposes only, I am selling no rights, nor do I claim the rights to distribute these). Serious buyers please feel free to contact me for specifics.

Definitely not complete, and not “curated”… not that that would be good either, necessarily. For instance, the book Le Dépays and a more recent one called Farewell to Cinema are missing, as are exhibition catalogs. I agree the various DVD and VHS products should be described (format, year, whether bootleg etc.). Also this is just insane to begin with. Sure, it would be very nice for an otaku or an institution to have a complete Marker collection. But the idea of a Market collection is in a way anathema to who Marker is, the many things he is, has done and continues to do. A true archive would also include his installations, and his work in Second Life. There are also many things that were published under pseudonyms, lost in the mists of time and anonymity. And the whole SLON work – not here, I don’t believe. The asking price is just a joke. What is this, Sothby’s? And the photograph is a bit of a provocation, given the degree to which Marker dislikes being photographed. No respect! Ah well, what ya gonna do?

    Hahaha, Alan Arkin.

Also, this was in TIME, of all places, a year ago!

Chris Marker is in Time! WTF?

Wow, I had forgotten all about this, and don’t even know how I came to re-discover this page 11 years later. Some mysterious things are going on. By the way, decisions are being made by both chrismarker.org and the FB group to stay away from or, as the case may be, redact posting photos of Marker, out of respect, and because he is, actually, watching carefully. Believe it or not, I don’t mind either way… But he does not suffer fools!
