KARAOKE in Malaysia, Kind Of…
So, I’ve been writing late into the night for work all week and haven’t really had a chance to look around at what’s happening at Cannes, but hopefully this will be the first in a series of posts about some of the films at Cannes that I’m stoked about.
From The Almighty, Omnipotent Twitch: a report on the first Malaysian film to screen at Cannes in 14 years – KARAOKE. This has exactly the kind of quietness and lushness that pushes all of my buttons. It makes me itch for the forever-upcoming I COME WITH THE RAIN.
….Chris Chong’s Karaoke… [snip]… is quickly gathering buzz here in advance of its first screening. I’ve heard those in the know compare Chong’s work to both Jia Zhangke and Apichatpong Weerasethakul, so you know you’re looking at something pretty special.
Also – it has durians! The king of fruits!
yum.
