Atlanta Gas Shortage

September 30, 2008

It’s like the 1970’s all over again here: Long lines, people screaming at each other. Luckily I managed to get some last Wednesday at around midnight. A cab driver pulled up next to me and told me that he had driven 20 miles to get gas (from Buckhead to Little Five Points). I put my car in the shop today so will be taking the bus all week. But this evening I drove down Moreland to go to the bank in Edgewood. The BP had a huge line went I went by. I made a deposit, turned right back around and it was empty – no more gas. If any station has any at all, it’s gone in an hour or so.

But fear not! My intrepid friend Tessa over at Drive A Faster Car (oh the irony!) has come up with a neat solution for Twitter users (Twitter-ers?). Just search Twitter for the hashtag #atlgas for updates from fellow users who have just filled up. Her plan has gained national attention (I found out about it on Consumerist and had to IM her to find out about it) and she has even gotten the Atlanta Journal Constitution to cooperate. Go Tessa!

UPDATE: Reader Missy says:

You can also get (free) updates to your mobile about where gas is available in Atlanta by txting ATLGAS to 695949. Been doing this since Sunday, and it’s pretty helpful. Good luck..

Thanks Missy!

Just wanted to say HI. I found your blog a few days ago on Technorati and have been reading it over the past few days.
